Friends Daniel and Matthew began sharing a shop in 2017 to pursue personal projects while working for other companies. During that time, they began collaborating on small millwork assignments for designers and contractors. After a few years of successful collaboration, Daniel and Matthew formalized their partnership, creating Terra Firma Builders in 2019.

Matthew Milne moved to Asheville from Iowa in 2012 after graduating from Iowa State University. First, he began working as a carpenter and finisher, then as a Project Manager for a local contractor. Matthew has managed a variety of projects, including retail build-outs, small renovations, whole-home remodels, and additions. During these projects, he formed relationships with local designers, subcontractors, and suppliers that serve Terra Firma Builders well today. Matthew lives with his partner Kerry and his cat Patsy and enjoys basketball, cooking, backpacking, and fishing.
Daniel DeCarlo grew up in Asheville, NC, and has fostered a lifelong interest in building and design. His first job was working as a carpenter for a homebuilder during the summers in high school. After college, he worked as a trim carpenter for six years before deciding to start Terra Firma Builders. Daniel has taken classes at the Penland School of Craft and the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship. In Daniel’s free time, he enjoys gardening, woodworking, cooking, and backpacking.
